I was
driving by a local dentist’s office the other day and noticed a very simple
message – “kindness matters”. Now, while
I would probably be more likely to support a dentist who lived this philosophy
in their practice, it got me to thinking about what this message says
throughout society. Unfortunately, we
are living in a time when it feels like kindness has taken a backseat to
political pragmatism and social agendas, but thankfully kindness is not dead. You see, our society is not defined by what
our politicians or social advocates do, we are what we, the people, choose to
be. Sure, some of the nastiness from
campaigns and causes might leech into our grassroots society, but we – as
friends and neighbors – still have the responsibility and opportunity to choose
who we want to be. We can still be kind,
gentle, caring people.
The Bible reminds
us of what is possible and proper by challenging, “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just
as God in Christ also has forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32). Let’s not allow the few who have forgotten
humanity steal the joy of being a part of the good communities in which we
live. Let’s be committed to showing
kindness to each other. It will enhance
to how others experience life and will shape how we choose to live.
