One of the
complaints heard most often in today’s religious community is how people are
losing a commitment to their faith. It
seems like people just aren’t as spiritually-minded as they once were. In all honesty, I imagine that this thought
has been espoused since the second generation of Christians, but it seems to
have really taken off in the last few years.
As I have pondered this (and read about it), I am not sure that the
issue is that there are less committed Christians as it is that there are fewer
people who consider themselves “marginal” Christians. Many of the people who would have called
themselves “social Christians” in years gone by have merely dropped the façade
and admitted their lack of commitment.
While there is no doubt that we are
facing a dilemma, the question is what we are going to do about it? We can complain and fuss all we want but that
isn’t going to do anything to alleviate the problem – so, what is the
answer? If we are going to make a
difference in a world that is losing its spirituality, those of us who are
committed to our faith must renew our commitment. We must focus on the importance of
evangelism. We must make sure our
example is well above reproach. We must
demonstrate the effectiveness of a pure lifestyle in a worldly society. Maybe more than anything, we must be willing
to display Christian love in hopes of reaching the unchurched and restoring the
unfaithful.
Christianity, today, is facing a
challenge. Are we going to sit on the
sidelines and fuss or are we going to get into the game and dedicate ourselves
to win the world for Christ?
