When I was a youngster I was blessed to be surrounded by a lot of people who cared about me.  Let me rephrase that, I was blessed to be surrounded by a lot of wise people who cared about me.  Throughout my youth I had people give me advice and had the opportunity to relive that advice as I encountered various challenges.  One of the gems of wisdom that kept reappearing in my life was a simple statement, “You don’t have to make all the mistakes on your own”.  Simply put, this bit of wisdom inferred that if I paid attention to the lives of the people around me, I could live a much less painful life.  By avoiding the missteps of some – and learning from wisdom of others – I had a better opportunity to live an easier life.
Centuries ago, a wise man named Socrates observed, “Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others have labored hard for.”.  In essence, whether it is by learning lessons of wisdom or avoiding the pitfalls of folly, when we read the reflections of others we can smooth our path.  Sure, reading can be fun, but it can also be edifying.
Are we investing our time in reading the books, blogs and articles penned by those around us?  When we take their messages to heart, we can gain from the hard work and hard knocks of others.
         Think About It!
