Just in case you need a reminder, we are exactly six months away from Christmas.  Now, if you are like me, that means that I still have about 180 days to complete my shopping – but, if you are one of those planners, you might want to start getting on the stick because we are already on the downhill slide.
I tend to think of myself as a planner, but the truth of the matter is that I am comfortable procrastinating.  I assume that I have plenty of time to get done what I need to get done.  While procrastination is not always a bad thing (you can usually get some pretty good deals on Christmas Eve), there are some times when it can have serious – and disastrous – results.  The most troubling of these times comes with our spiritual lives.  Most of us live like we believe that we have our whole life is ahead of us, but we never know how quickly or how seriously things could change.  We might feel like we have plenty of time to get our lives in order, but we never know.
When the early church struggled to understand the return of the Lord, Peter reminded them, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.”.  (II Peter 3:10)  The idea behind this concept is twofold:  First, this world is temporary and secondly, its end is unknown.  Sure, there is a lot of talk about climate change being detrimental to our world, but there is something even more certain and something more devastating, we just don’t  know when it will happen.
No matter how or when our lives will end on this planet, we can be assured that we aren’t going to get out of this world as physical beings.  Are we prepared for eternity?  Don’t delay – spiritual procrastination can have eternal consequences.
