The other day I was
corresponding with a friend of mine who was trying to decide what to do about
the impending arrival of Irma. As he
assessed his decision, he quoted something his father used to tell him – if you
are going to be stupid, you’d better be tough!
The first time I read his comment, I just about rolled out of my chair
in laughter, but the more I thought about the point, the more I appreciated the
wisdom. In essence, bad decision-making
is not for the faint of heart. When we
refuse to be smart, we can’t blame others and we had better be ready to face
the consequences for our actions. Sure,
sometimes we might dodge a bullet, but often we’ll end up getting exactly what could
be expected.
Please don’t misunderstand,
I am not advocating that we develop toughness through erroneous thinking,
rather I am hoping that we’ll choose wisdom.
We don’t all have to learn the hard way, in fact, the best way to
educate ourselves is through the process of pre-testing ideas to make sure they
are based on sound reasoning and will produce solid results. The Bible contrasts the plight of the foolish
with the success of the wise when it states, “For the waywardness of the naive will kill
them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. But he who listens to me shall live
securely and will be at ease from the dread of evil.”. (Proverbs 1:32-33)
I am happy to report that my friend is
safe and relied upon wisdom not courage.
That was a good reminder for me the next time I face a decision.
Think About It!
