When I was growing up I was told to monitor what I watched and listened to because it was going to have an impact on my life. We were coming out of a pretty conservative time and a lot of the images and sounds were provocative (to say the least). I remember thinking that the warning was much ado about nothing – but the older I get the more I see the potential impact media can have on us. Interestingly, while there a lot of focus on “naughty” words and pictures; I believe the tone of what we see and hear can create issues. In addition to being cautions of racy photos and vulgar language, we need to be wary of things that drag us down. Shows that constantly criticize other people, music that promotes immorality, podcasts that advocate hate and bigotry can do damage as well.
It wouldn’t surprise me if those who warned me in the past used the phrase “GIGO” … “Garbage In, Garbage Out” to describe the dangers; but there is another, more positive way of looking at the situation. The Bible reminds us, “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” (Philippians 4:8). Are we looking to improve our lives? Maybe the easiest way is to improve what we see and hear.
Think About It!
