How many urgent messages do you get in your email?  It seems like just about every day I am getting a message marked “Urgent”.  While most of them are just sales ploys to get me to open the message and read it, but every once in a while I will get something that is legitimate and some of them are even urgent.  Typically, these messages outline the need to do something because a deadline is approaching.  Again, there are times when even these are just a ploy to get my attention (and my action), but there are times when they are true and there is a need to act. 

As I thought about this, I wondered if there shouldn’t be some passages of scripture marked “Urgent” in the Bible.  Sure, everything in there is important, but there are some things that should get and hold our attention because they are pressing – they need attention and need it now!  One of the verses I think should be marked as urgent is Paul’s message, “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.  Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.” (I Thessalonians 4:16-17).  Folks, we need to remember that the Lord is coming back and we need to act in preparation for His return.  If we want to meet Him in the air and live with Him in eternity, we need to make sure that are lives are aligned with His. 

Are you living with and for the Lord?  If not, this article needs urgent attention.  We don’t know when the deadline will be, but we do know that if we don’t act properly and in time we will miss out on eternal life.

The other day I was watching a television show that used a rather common term applied to overcoming challenges. When organizations experience unexpected setbacks – especially when they lose key people – they rely upon the concept of “Next Man Up”. In essence, when our starters (or stars) go down, effective organizations rely upon their next levels to step into the vacancy. While this is an effective response, have we given much thought as to how we prepare to be the “next people up”? First, we must know our job. When I was a youngster, I remember hearing about this thing called the Generation Gap. I was a little bit too young to be active in the social movements of the 1960s, but I do remember listening to the challenges the generations were experiencing way back then. Interestingly, now that I have been on both sides of the aging process, I have to admit that the Gap of the 1960s was nothing new. With the development of each generation comes conflict. The young people don’t feel like the older people understand them and the older folks tend to believe their input is being underappreciated. Too often trust is the casualty when two generations collide. The sad thing is that it doesn’t have to be this way.
