Who are your spiritual heroes? Most of us can point to a biblical character that has inspired us in our spiritual journey. Maybe it was the faith of Abraham, the courage of David, the love of Mary or even the zeal of Peter. The Bible is filled with influential examples that have encouraged believers throughout the generations. Yet is there someone else who has motivated you? Maybe it was someone from history, but it also could have been someone you personally knew who helped you develop into the person you became. It could have been someone you read about in a biography – or maybe it was someone who read the Bible to you. We have all be influenced by people who have gone before us, do we give them the credit they deserve?
One of my favorite images from the Bible comes after the writer of the New Testament book of Hebrews reviewed the lives of some of the great influences of the Old Testament, then challenged his readers, “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us …” (Hebrews 12:1). The thought of a coliseum filled with spiritual influences cheering us on in our own race is encouraging. It can inspire us to give it our all and finish what they started when they laid the foundation for us.Are you looking for something that can help you stay on track? Maybe by looking back to those great characters and feeling their presence can help us focus on driving forward to where our potential can lead us.
