Thursday; April 1

Well, it is finally here. Opening Day, 2021. I have to admit that I was growing kind of disillusioned with Major League Baseball the last several years, then we had the debacle of 2020 – a sixty game season that started sometime in the summer and had all kinds of odd new rules. I guess you have to be glad for the world champion Los Angeles Dodgers, but everybody else is probably eager to forget MLB 2020. And that is exactly what we get to do today! No, we aren’t back to the good of days of baseball, but we are a lot closer than what we were this time last year. The boys of summer are playing in front of live people in the early days of April. Maybe that is the aroma of freshly mown grass I smell and the warmth of brilliant sunshine I feel!
Every once in a while, I need a reality check and today is a good one for me. I can fuss and pout about the decline of my favorite pastime or I seek to find the good in what is still the best game in town. Yes, certain aspects of the game have changed, but each team still gets 27 untimed outs in the timeless game.
Not everyone shares my appreciation for baseball, but we all have things that we have come to take for granted or even dismissed because they aren’t what we want them to be or how we remember they used to be. When we shut down our enjoyment of these things, who are we hurting? Whether our source of amusement is volunteering, politics, sports or entertainment, when we walk away from them we will miss them more than they will miss us, so why not try to enjoy them? Sure, there may be times when we need to take a stand to defend our morals, but when our dissatisfaction doesn’t rise to that level, why should we steal some of our personal enjoyment from ourselves just because things have changed? We have enough serious issues in our lives, maybe we should return a spirit of fun and games to our fun and games.
Think About It!
