While I see the traps of nostalgia, I have to admit there are some things that I do miss from days gone by. I long for the days of my childhood sports heroes, Shoney’s strawberry pie and watching the astronauts launching from Cape Kennedy and either circling the earth or walking on the moon. Another thing I miss are the days when our on-screen heroes were the good guys wearing the white hats. They did what was right and still came out on top. While I can see some of the allure of some of our modern media “superheroes” (and the reality of their complex moral nature), I do long for those days when the good guys transcended the moral landmines and did the right thing.

The reason for this trip down Memory Lane is that the other day I was reading from the New Testament and came across this description of Jesus, “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13-14). These two verses are followed by an incredible description of the ultimate Hero – our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Not only is He powerful, He is also perfect. He did more than rescue us from a burning building or save us from Snidely Whiplash by unlashing us from the railroad tracks seconds before the train ran over us, He delivered us from evil and brought us safely into eternal life.

There are several images generated by the life of Jesus, but let’s not forget His role of the eternal Hero – the One who saves us. Whether we start out as the evil villain or we are the victim of one, we have Someone who cares enough to deliver us.

Think About It!
