There are a lot of good, old fashioned
words that have fallen out of vogue – one of which is “folly”. I mean, when was the last time you actually
heard someone use the word “folly”? For
those who might not be too hip on this seemingly archaic word, folly is defined
as something that lacks good sense or normal prudence and foresight. A similar word is “foolishness”. Folly and foolishness describe things that
just don’t have a whole lot of wisdom.
The reason for this journey back in
time is a proverb I came across the other day that states, “The foolishness of
man ruins his way, and his heart rages against the Lord.” (Proverbs 19:3). The wise man of the Old Testament cut right
to the core of much human struggle by pointing out that we make life tougher
than it needs to be when we do silly or stupid things. When we choose to neglect wisdom and insight,
we are apt to find ourselves ending up in the proverbial ditch of our life-long
journey. Interestingly, as alluded to by
the King Solomon, when people choose folly, they often blame God for their
condition when, in reality, they are the ones at fault. Rather than seeing the error of their own
ways, they try to pin their struggles on the Lord.
Let’s make it a point to seek wisdom
and good common sense. If we aren’t too
sure where to start, the Old Testament book of Proverbs might set us off on the
proper path.
