The classic TV show “M*A*S*H*” dealt with a lot of topics through their years including heroism. While I didn’t always agree with all the ideals the show’s producers pushed, I remember one episode in which Hawkeye Pierce and Frank Burns were facing a scary situation. They found themselves having to make a choice – do nothing and wait to see what happens or take action (be the hero) and put themselves in danger. Pierce finally makes a speech in which he said that a ninety-nine percent of the time a hero is someone who is tired enough, cold enough and hungry enough not to care what happens to them (Charlie’s G-Rated paraphrase). In essence, often heroes are just people fed up with the current conditions to the point that they are willing to step outside their zone of safety and do something about it.
I realize that this is an entertainment show, but there may be something to this type of reasoning. I don’t know about you, but I am growing weary of watching our communities, our country and our world be overrun by principles and values that are in conflict with decency. I am tired of seeing good people being portrayed as evil and villains being hailed as the saviors. I have had enough of being tentative with a message of goodness and righteousness. In essence, maybe I am at my tipping point. I feel like I am tired of watching satan use people to run down what is noble and just maybe I am just tired enough to take a stand. Long before the writers places words in Hawkeye Pierce’s mouth, the Apostle Paul challenged Christians, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, ‘But the righteous man shall live by faith.’” (Romans 1:16-17). Folks, I am not advocating that we become belligerent, I guess what I am saying is we don’t have to sit by silently awaiting for someone to say something … let’s take the initiative to defend what is good and advocate for what is righteous.
Think About It!
