For a lot of people yesterday was an odd day – nah, let’s call it what it was ... it was weird!  Typically churches swell during Easter services almost as much as the restaurants do for their noon buffets.  It is common to see children running around looking for hidden plastic eggs that contain melting chocolate or cold, hard cash.  Neighbors greet neighbors as they begin yard work in earnest (well, that is unless you live in the Northern Plains where neighbors meet neighbors clearing the sidewalks from the drifts dropped by the overnight blizzard).   Yep, yesterday it was eerily quiet.
While the social element of Easter might have been missing yesterday, there was at least a comfortable feeling in the theme of the resurrection of Jesus.  No, we may not have been able to worship together in the same building, but many of us shared the common spirit of an adoration of the One who overcame death.  In reality, the thing that unites those who relish Easter isn’t eggs or lunch or yardwork, it is the realization that the Lord overcame sin and death so that we can live in eternity with Him.  You know, come to think of if it, isn’t that what should unite us every day of the year, not just one Sunday in the Spring?  Isn’t that what gives us hope each and every day of the year?
It will be a long time before we forget Easter, 2020 – but let’s make a commitment to never forget that day 2000 years ago when Jesus overcame the grave.  Let’s make sure that each and every day we proclaim that we believe in the One, “... who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord ...” (Romans 1:4).
