Friday; January 31
This weekend the National
Football League will determine its champion.
While the NFL has had championship games for decades it wasn’t until late
in the 1960s that the title game would be called the Super Bowl. (By the way, the Green Bay Packers won that
game by defeating the Kansas City Chiefs by the score of 35-10.) I don’t know that the first game of the
new-fangled playoff system was a complete success, but through the past half century
the “game” has morphed into a spectacle complete with a halftime extravaganza,
outrages commercials, all day coverage – and, oh yeah, even a football
game.
While the NFL will tell you
that Super Bowl Sunday had its origins in Los Angeles on January 15, 1967,
there is another super Sunday that transcends all others. The Bible makes note of a spring day
centuries ago when a few woman came to prepare Jesus for His burial, “But on the first day of the week, at
early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled
away from the tomb, but when
they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.” (Luke
24:1-3). Folks, this is the “superest”
of all Sundays, in fact it is the best day ever!
I hope you
are able to enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday this weekend, but before becoming too
interested in the game, why not take some time to worship the One who led the
greatest comeback of all times? Jesus
Christ overcame the perceived defeat of the grave to become the Ultimate Victor
over death!
Think About It!
