I have been reading the
autobiography of a church leader from a couple centuries ago and I have come to
a conclusion – I am not really all that bight!
As I read his thoughts and try to grasp his theological reason, I am
blown away by how deeply he thought and how well he wrote. He may have lived a long time ago, but he –
and many more from his time – are head and shoulders above me.
Now, having said
all of that, I think we need to be careful when it comes to religious
thought. While there is value in
studying religious theory and developing a deep religious understanding, we
must not miss out on one important fact – Christianity, at its heart, is a very
simple concept. It is great to be able
to explain what leads believers to their faith, but the most important aspect
of our religion is to have that faith.
Deep concepts are wonderful, but simple understanding and obedience are
what ultimately save us.
Centuries ago, as
Jesus taught many common people with limited education He noted, “If you continue in My word, then you are
truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth,
and the truth will make you free.” (John 8:31-32). Let’s do our best to learn as much as we can
about our Christian lifestyle, but let’s never overlook the simple truth that
can save us.
Think About It!
