What do you imagine our
forefathers would think if they could look upon us and see what this nation has
become? I think the ones who valued
freedom would smile at how we live in a time and place where people are
unrestrained in their ability to express their thoughts (no matter if their
opinions are popular or divisive). Those
who fought and died for the liberty of all citizens from all races and genders
would have to be pleased at the freedoms we have today. No, we aren’t perfect, but we are a lot closer
to where we should be than we were 150 to 200 years ago. I can’t speak for all patriots of all time,
but I think that many of them would think that the sacrifices they made are
continuing to pay dividends into the 21st Century.
This weekend we will take the time to remember all of the veterans who
have served this nation. As we stop and
reflect, I would like us to do a couple of things: First, if you personally know a veteran,
thank them for their service. Take the
time to give them a call, send them a text, write them a note or walk up to
them at church and say “thank you”.
Secondly, let’s allow our appreciation for our veterans draw us closer
to each other. This may seem a bit odd
with all of the debate going on these days, but have we ever stopped to think
what our veterans have done for us? Not
only did they sacrifice so that we could live in peace on this continent, but
they also set aside their differences to unite us as a nation. They overlooked skin color, political, social
and religious differences to defend our nation.
Sure, they were still individuals, but in service to their nation, they
became like-minded.
Are we really thankful for our veterans?
What are we doing (practically) to show it?
Think about it!
